Another incredible sunrise at Lake Manawa State Park, Council Bluffs, Iowa. I simply cannot get enough of this place.
Boy Scout Island, Lake Manawa State Park, Council Bluffs, Iowa. Today (Sunday, September 18, 2016, noon to 4 pm) is day two of the Southwest Iowa Art Tour at the Harvester in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Here's the official Facebook invite for details. One of the unique aspects of the show is that artists are encouraged to create art while the show is going on. So I’ll be photographing some flowers alongside my print display. If any of this sounds interesting, please stop by.
Later this month, I’ll be participating in a special art exhibit in Council Bluffs, Iowa, which will hopefully become a recurring event for art lovers and artists alike. And it’s particularly exciting for me because it will allow me the opportunity to show some of my larger prints, which don’t ordinarily get to see the light of day because they’re too big for most of my local shows. The show will be hosted by Rock, PaPer, Scissors salon, which is located in the Smith-Davis Building (north side of Bayliss Park, Council Bluffs; 532 1st Ave, Suite 204). March 26, 2016 (the day before Easter), from 4-7 pm.
This is the official invite on Facebook with further details.
Lake Manawa, Boy Scout Island. These crisp fall mornings are fantastic, aren’t they? Yesterday morning was overcast but nearly windless here in Council Bluffs, so I was hoping for at least a few minutes of sunrise color behind the mirrored surface of Lake Manawa. Around the time I was starting to give up hope, a deep red glow suddenly spilled from the horizon, scraping across the underside of the steely blue clouds. What an amazing sight! And within a minute, it was all gone. I felt lucky to have seen it, let alone capture it. Here’s to fall in the Midwest! This is another in a Boy Scout Island series I've been working on for years now.
Lake Manawa. Boy Scout Island (this is another in the BSI series I’ve been working on for a few years now). This photo is from a few mornings ago, before the lake ice began to melt in earnest. I love winter, but I’m glad to see signs of spring.
Here's another in my Boy Scout Island series. It was taken this morning. I originally began this series of photographs to document the island (some would insist that it should now be called Boy Scout Peninsula) in all seasons and in various weather conditions, but now I go back again and again mostly because it's the most peaceful spot I know of to greet the rising sun.
This is the latest installment from my Boy Scout Island series (Lake Manawa State Park, Council Bluffs, Iowa).
Here's another installation in my Boy Scout Island series. Lake Manawa State Park, Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Here is another photograph of magical Monarch Lake, whose surface was strikingly still on the morning of our first visit. When we first got there, not long after sunrise, Teri, Gavin, and I had the lake all to ourselves. That's the great thing about early mornings; most people have a deep aversion not only to waking up early, but also to getting up and at 'em at that hour. Accordingly, it is my favorite time of the day for photography.
Since I am pressed for time this morning, I'll leave you with this simple scene and this simple thought: In this day and age when subtle signs of human intervention seem to be woven into the fabric of "wilderness," it is thrilling to find the untouched places.
